What This Blog is Not About

One of the first things I want to point out is that the whole conversation around Climate Change is in a deep rut. I think it has been in this rut for years (maybe even since its inception). I think one of the reasons we all tend to tune out of, or avoid, Climate Change conversations is because we’ve kind of already got “the message.” Climate Change is a big, bad, depressing, overwhelming, endless black hole that none of us can do anything about. And then, just in case you thought maybe with time there’d be some good news, or we’d find out that it is just not that bad, well look again, because it’s worse than we thought.

Not exactly inviting. Definitely not where I want to spend my time, and not where you should spend yours.

Recently, as I was telling some friends about the launch of this blog, I discovered that the first thing I wanted to say, before I tried to explain what my blog was about, was to quickly disclaim what my blog was very much NOT About.

So here, specifically, it is…

Me, This, Now is NOT about:

  1. Proving that Climate Change is real (it’s real).

  2. Teaching or explaining the geological, chemical, and/or physical details of what is causing Climate Change (it’s complicated).

  3. Endlessly reiterating how bad or serious Climate Change is (although I will of course acknowledge and refer to this reality frequently).

  4. Blaming others for not taking action.

  5. Guilting ourselves out for not taking more action.

  6. Lamenting the failure of our government to respond to Climate Change more appropriately.

  7. Lamenting the failure of our government to respond to lots of things appropriately.Journalistic-level reporting on the newest climate science.

  8. A faithful or complete reporting of the day-to-day headlining news around Climate Change (although some bits will inevitably make it their way in too).

What you will find:

  1. Specific, concrete thoughts about the challenge of coming to grips with Climate Change, and strategies for doing so.

  2. Reference to external published articles, science, podcasts, and thought leaders to support said thoughts and strategies.

  3. Diary-like ruminations on the various realities and opportunities Climate Change presents.

  4. Systematic consideration of the ways in which society has/has not responded to Climate Change, and how that could change.

  5. Specific ideas of the various ways we can engage in more satisfying ways with Climate Change.

  6. Occasional life-hacks to reduce your carbon footprints.

  7. Occasional life-hacks to increase your ability to be present to your own life.

  8. Inspirational Quotes.

  9. Reviews of relevant books, movies, articles, podcasts, etc.

  10. Scenes from my daily homesteading life and musings about deconstructing our various societal dependencies and interdependencies and the joy of discovering of self-resilience (that is, like, my other job).

Hopefully, some of you feel like included in this list are at least a few things that might be useful for you ; )

On that note, please do leave a comment. The site, the effort, and the community will benefit greatly from participation. The bad news is that login is necessary to reduce trolling issues. The good news is login is very simple, and you are among friends on a pretty private channel right now, as this is only being circulated to a relatively small group of my personal friends and colleagues. That means we can get to know each other and maybe explore a little more deeply than we otherwise would as anonymous commenters on a site with major traffic. Let’s get this conversation goin’.

Thanks for clarifying. It's such a complex topic! I am also interested in a more positive narrative. Perhaps I can interview you for our Locally Sourced Science radio show.
